Am I Really Talking to My Spirit Guides — or Just Making It Up?

When you first start connecting with your Spirit Guides — or even if you’ve been connecting for a while but the guidance feels faint or subtle — doubt can naturally creep in.
Am I really talking to my Spirit Guides… or am I just making this up?
Unlike human-to-human conversations, which we hear clearly with our physical ears, Spirit communication works very differently. When someone speaks to you in the physical world, it’s obvious — you hear their voice, see their lips move, read their body language. Even if you close your eyes, you can still hear them talking.
Spirit Guide communication — often called Soul-to-Soul communication — isn’t like that.
It’s quieter. Subtler. Often experienced as thoughts, feelings, images, sensations, or a sudden knowing. It can feel so gentle that it’s easy to dismiss it or doubt it altogether.
So let’s talk about how Spirit actually communicates — and how to tell the difference between genuine guidance and the busy mind.
How Your Spirit Guides Communicate
Your Spirit Guides don’t have physical bodies or human minds, so they don’t need to communicate through spoken words, gestures, or facial expressions. Instead, they communicate through what we call the intuitive senses:
Clairvoyance (seeing images or symbols)
Clairaudience (inner hearing)
Clairsentience (feeling sensations or emotions)
Claircognizance (clear knowing)
When we try to communicate with Spirit using our physical senses, we often feel blocked or disappointed — simply because we’re listening in the wrong way.
Connecting with your Guides requires a gentle shift: less focus on physical confirmation, and more awareness of subtle inner experience.
And yes — that can feel unfamiliar at first.

How to Tell the Difference Between Guidance and Your Mind
1. Guidance Feels Loving, Calm and Steady — Even When It Nudges You
Your Spirit Guides always communicate from love.
Even when they’re encouraging you to stretch, change direction, or take responsibility, the underlying feeling is calm, grounded, and supportive. There’s no panic. No urgency. No emotional pressure.
Guidance never feels threatening, chaotic, or shaming.
So if a message feels harsh, rushed, fear-based, or critical — especially if it sounds disappointed or angry — that’s not your Guides. That’s your ego mind trying to keep you “safe” through control.
Spirit guidance may be firm at times, but it is never unkind.
2. Spirit Interrupts Your Normal Thought Pattern (This One Is Important)
This is one of the clearest ways to recognise Spirit communication — and one people often overlook.
Your everyday thoughts tend to run on predictable loops:
Buy milk. Hang out the washing. Feed the dog. Drink more water. Pay the bill.
They follow logic and routine.
Spirit doesn’t.
Spirit often interrupts your thought stream in a way that doesn’t logically belong.
For example: you’re mentally running through your to-do list, and suddenly an image appears — warm apple pie, the smell of cinnamon, butterscotch lollies wrapped in a white handkerchief. You weren’t thinking about this at all, yet it arrives fully formed.
Instantly, you’re reminded of your grandmother. How she used to bake when you were scared. How safe and loved you felt in her presence. Your body softens. Your nervous system settles. You feel comforted — without trying to.
That interruption didn’t come from logical thinking.
That’s Spirit communicating through imagery, memory, emotion, and sensation — all at once.
Guidance often arrives quietly like this, then fades again. It doesn’t argue its case. It doesn’t repeat itself loudly. It simply lands.
That interruption is the giveaway.
3. Guidance Doesn’t Always Arrive When You Ask — and That’s Normal
Sometimes you ask a question, sit quietly… and nothing happens.
That doesn’t mean your Guides didn’t hear you. And it definitely doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong.
Guidance may arrive later that day, the next morning, through a conversation, a book that catches your eye, a sign, or a sudden moment of clarity.
Spirit isn’t bound by urgency — and it won’t always answer in the exact timing or format your mind expects.
If the answer doesn’t arrive immediately, don’t assume silence means absence. Often it simply means the guidance is arriving in a way that will land more clearly for you.
4. You’re Not Limited to Just One Intuitive Sense
You are not “only” clairvoyant. You are not “just” clairsentient.
That kind of limitation belongs to the human mind — not the Soul.
Your Guides will use any of your intuitive senses to communicate: images, feelings, inner hearing, bodily sensations, emotional shifts, or sudden knowing.
The moment you set the intention to receive guidance through any of your clairs, in any way, communication becomes more fluid and natural.

5. Talk to Your Guides Like You Would a Trusted Friend
This is one of the most practical — and powerful — ways to build trust.
Talk to your Guides. Often.
Not just when life feels heavy or you need big answers — but in the small, everyday moments too.
Ask for help choosing the right timing.Ask for support when you feel unsure.Share your worries. Say thank you.
At first, it may feel like a habit you’re building — and that’s okay. The more you communicate with them in ordinary moments, the more natural it becomes. And the easier it is to trust what you receive when bigger questions arise.
You’re Not Making It Up
If you’ve ever wondered whether you’re imagining it all — that’s often a sign you’re actually tuning in.
Doubt means you’re on the right path but your mind will make one final attempt to control you back to a familiar, safe pattern.
And like any new way of listening, it takes patience, practice, and kindness with yourself.
